Class Description and Instructors

A.  Pediatric & Geriatrics
St. Vincent / UTMC Lifeflight
The pediatrics section of this class will cover important emergency care for pediatric patients.  
The Geriatrics section will cover current medical and traumatic emergencies in the geriatric population. State of Ohio C.E.U.'s 2092 for all levels of E.M.S. will be available for this class.  The pediatrics section of this class will cover important emergency care for pediatric patients.

B.  Appliance Fires Dan Schuh, Joseph P. Schuh, CFI, CVFI  Barker & Herbert Labs
This course is designed to identify common fire causes in all appliances.  This will help firefighters understand how they happen and what to look for.

C.  Agricultural Accidents

     Saturday Class Only

Grain rescue will also start out in the classroom and end with a tour of a grain storage facility and mock grain rescue. Pesticide poisonings will also be covered. CEU's will be given. Please dress warmly; Full turnout gear is required.

The life you save may be your own. Your day will consist of three sessions. First session you will learn proper and proven search and rescue techniques along with the victim location, firefighter survial, and orienting yourself in a structure. The second session will deal with the SCBA, it's components, and proper use. The third and most exciting session will be the practical applications of what you learned in the morning sessions. You will be broken into groups according to experience. New recruits, your instructor will walk you through step by step. The more experienced, the more demanding the challenge. Are you ready to meet the challenge? This class will show you your own limitations. Come prepared to learn, have a good time, and work hard. Full turnout gear and a SCBA is required. No facial hair that interferes with the facepiece seal of the SCBA will be permitted. A spare cylinder is advised. Please bring your SCBA to the classroom to save time.

This class is a prerequisite for the Operation Level and Technician Level for River/Water Rescue through the State Fire Academy.  It will also demonstrate personal gear and equipment for River/Water Rescue.


E. Understanding ISO's Public Protection Program, Plus the proposed changes to the current PPC Schedule

Insurance Services Office Field Staff

Achieving community cost savings and and winning public support may be as simple as making minor change to how your community prepares their public fire defenses. Joim members of the Insurance Services Office, Inc. field staff as they provide the tools and resources needed to improve your community's ISO rating.  In this important course you will learn about the ISO, Inc., including a historical perspective of previous grading schedules.  An overview of the current Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS) will be presented.  All grading items and the individual weighting assignments in Fire Alarm, Fire Department and Water Supply will be covered.  The establishment of needed fire flows  and their importance throughout the grading process will be emphasized.  Public Protection Class and Individual Property Fire Suppression Evaluations as well as Alternative Water Supplies (tanker shuttle) will be explained.  Also  discussed will be the new PPC classification Class 8B.  Important correlation between insurer loss experience and PPC is included.  An example of commercial and personal  lines insurance rate anaysis relative to PPC will be explained as well as how to interpret the PPC numbers.  

In addition, a discussion will be held on what the proposals are for the new FSRS Schedule which is now being formulated and tested in the field.  There are some radical changes to the proposed schedule which should greatly benefit the fire protection  for each community.  The potential timetable for implementation of the schedule will also be presented


F.  Fire & Explosion Investigations

This course is designed for all first responders whether representing the fire service, EMS or law enforcement.  The first half of each morning will focus on events we respond to involving fires.  During the afternoon session, incidents related to explosions for both accidental and of incendiary nature will be the topic.  This is an interactive class designed not only to encourage the confidence of all inparticipation, but also to provide an environment of fellowship, which will enhance the overall learning experience.  These gentlemen look forward to your attendance in this class one of the two days here at BGSU.  


G.  Aircraft Disasters

This course is designed to familiarize fire crews with hazards, unique problems and fire extinguishing agent application methods.  All instructors have a strong background in civilian and military aircraft.  Course will prepare your fire department for aircraft disasters and will explain how NIMS plays an important part in the outcome of the emergency.


H.  HazMat / WMB Awareness Course

This six hour course was designed by the Ohio Fire Academy and approved through the National Office for Domestic Preparedness.  Topics to be covered in this course include basic recognition, identification, first responder and public protective actions necessary for initial response to a chemical, biological, radiological or explosive incident.  No prerequisite needed for the course.

HH.  Public Information Officer 101

An introductory course for Public Information Officers.  This one day course covers the basics of public information including how to effectively communicate with the media before and during emergency situations.  This course is a "hands on" workshop for P.I.O.s.

                                A.M.  This class will cover the new "one card" system enacted by House Bill 1 and discuss creative ways to get 

                                          CEU's for both Fire and EMS personnell.

                                P.M.   Hybrid Vehicle Awareness T-t-T

                                          This class will educate all emergency responders on the trend of hybrid vehicles and other new vehicle

                                          technology.  This course meets the intent of NFPA 1006 and 1670, the sections specifically dealing

                                         with vehicles.  Students will be able to take this information and utilize it towards CEU's for their respective

                                         departments and other emergency responders.
 

II.  Methamphetamine Labs

(Sunday only)

A look at what Methamphetamine is and the problems associated with it from a county experiencing it first hand.  Attendees will be informed of those methods of manufacturing methamphetamine located in and around northwest Ohio.  Also discussed will be the patterns of abuse by addicts, children found in the labs, and the potential long term problems associated with methamphetamine labs.  Suggested protocols for Fire and EMS in responding to these hazardous sites, such as decontamination, removal of children and crime scene investigation.


J.   LP Gas/Haz-mat Guidelines

This course is designed to enhance the Haz-mat responses to LP gas emergencies.  Characteristics of handling and the control of leaks in both fire and non fire related incidents.  Outside evolutions.  Full turnout gear required for outdoor evolutions.  Thanks to Ohio Propane Education and Research Control, Allen County, Lima Ohio LEPC for funding this class.


K. Emergency Vehicle Response

The increase in debilitating or fatal incidents involving emergency service and highway safety workers worldwide is on the rise.  Ideas and methods for creating a safer work place on the highways.

P.M.  INTERSECTIONS

The second greatest number of accidents and the most severe accidents involving emergency vehicles occur at intersections.  Changes in driving methods can reduce intersection crashes

A.M.  EMERGENCY VEHICLE ROLLOVER PROTECTION

Driver error is the major contributing factor in nearly all emergency vehicle rollover crashes.  The presentation focuses on physical dynamics of vehicle operations, mechanics of vehicle operations, common rollover circumstances and best practices for maintaining vehicle control.

P.M.   TRAILERS IN THE EMERGENCY RESPONSE BUSINESS

Use of trailers in the emergency services is increasing.  This program is designed to educate drivers on the safe and proper towing of trailers for responders.  This is an overview presentation of the new trailer safety program.

 


l..  CFSI Recertification

Ohio State Fire Marshal, Code Enforcement Bureau 

This six hour class will provide an opportunity for Certified Fire Safety Inspectors to begin aquiring needed continuing education credits as required by Section 4765.55 of the Ohio Revised Code and Chapter 4765-20 of the Ohio Administrative Code to practice as a CFSI.  The course content will follow the guidelines as prescribed  by OAC 4765-20-16, particularly the enforcement of fire codes, fire code administration, the safe use and maintenance of facilities and buildings, and uses subject to the Ohio Fire Code and the legal aspects of code enforcement.

This course is to give incident commanders, Chiefs and lead officers an opportunity to learn the things that they will need to know and do if they have an unfortunate incident with a Line of Duty death.  They will learn what they need to do for the Federal reports to receive support for the family as well as the reports for the State Bureau of Workers Comp.  Also there will be a full explanation of the NOVFA Charity Fund and how it works.

 


N.    ICS 400

This course provides training on and resources for personnel who require advanced application of incident command system (ICS).  The target audience for the course includes senior personnel who are expected to perform in a management capacity at an incident or event.  This includes individuals who may serve as Incident Commanders or as members of the Command or General Staff,.  Area Command or multi-agency coordination entity/Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Management.

Prerequisites: ICS-100; ICS-200; IS-700; ICS-300 or equivalents. 

 

 

         

O.  Medical First Responders Symposium

This program is specifically designed for the Medical First Responder with a combination of topic lectures and practical skill stations.  Participants that complete this program will receive Medical First Responder EMS-CEU's that are approved for the Ohio Department of Public Safety and Michigan Department of Community Health.  The topics included in this program will be:

.P.  New Vehicle Safety Systems for the Rescuer

This classroom only "power point" presentation will familiarize the rescuer with new vehicle safety systems as well as new vehicle construction and how to deal with them in auto extrication scenarios.  Each student will learn about Vehicle Anatomy, Identification of Safety Systems, Air Bag Systems, Seat Belt Pretensioning Systems, Battery Systems and Locations, new glass technology, Hydraulic lift cylinders, car fires relating to these systems, extrication techniques and more.

Prerequisites: Certified Firefighters by the State of Ohio of Firefighter I or II or I-A with a minimum of three years experience and has completed a live fire training program.  Fire Chief or Training Officer shall submit documented approval on fire department letterhead.  Protective clothing and SCBA may be subject to damage.

R. Trauma

This course meets the requirements for the Ohio Department of EMS6 hours of adult trauma.  Continuing education hours provided by Lifeflight.  Students must attend for the full day to get the 6 hour credit.


S..  Foam

This class is an awareness class of A and B foams.  We will cover foam systems, and differences between class A and B foams.  This is a classroom only class.  No turnout gear will be needed.  You will leave this class with a good understanding of what the white stuff can do to the red stuff.  We will also discuss ethanol and what firefighters need to understand about ethanol.


T.  Structure Fire Tactics
