Class Description and Instructors

A.  Geriatrics
St. Vincent / MUH Lifeflight
The Geriatrics section will cover current medical and traumatic emergencies in the geriatric population. State of Ohio C.E.U.'s 2092 for all levels of E.M.S. will be available for this class.

B.  Pediatric Emergencies Pat Ambrose and Staff

The Pediatrics class will cover important emergency care for pediatric patients. State of Ohio C.E.U.'s 2092 for all levels of E.M.S. will be available for this class.

C.  Agricultural Accidents

     Saturday Class Only

Grain rescue will also start out in the classroom and end with a tour of a grain storage facility and mock grain rescue. Pesticide poisonings will also be covered. CEU's will be given. Please dress warmly; Full turnout gear is required.

The life you save may be your own. Your day will consist of three sessions. First session you will learn proper and proven search and rescue techniques along with the victim location, firefighter survial, and orienting yourself in a structure. The second session will deal with the SCBA, it's components, and proper use. The third and most exciting session will be the practical applications of what you learned in the morning sessions. You will be broken into groups according to experience. New recruits, your instructor will walk you through step by step. The more experienced, the more demanding the challenge. Are you ready to meet the challenge? This class will show you your own limitations. Come prepared to learn, have a good time, and work hard. Full turnout gear and a SCBA is required. No facial hair that interferes with the facepiece seal of the SCBA will be permitted. A spare cylinder is advised. Do not bring the SCBA or turnout gear to the classroom, you will have time to get them.

This course will prepare the rescuer for water rescues and caring for the victim.  It will also demonstrate the proper equipment a vessel is required to have.

Achieving community cost savings and and winning public support may be as simple as making minor change to how your community prepares their public fire defenses. This class will provide an overview of how the fire suppression rating schedule is used to classify your fire protection deliverly system. It will cover: Determining needed fire flow; Where is the ISO to go for help; The fire suppression rating schedule; and "Hauled water."


F.  Fire Investigation

A course in fire/explosion investigation covering the basics of science and theory, while highlighting some of the misconceptions of cause and effect. Exploration of the most advance theories of determination will be covered.


G.  Aircraft Disasters

This course is designed to familiarize fire crews with hazards, unique problems and fire extinguishing agent application methods.  All instructors have a strong background in civilian and military aircraft.  Course will prepare your fire department for aircraft disasters and will explain how NIMS plays an important part in the outcome of the emergency.


H.  HazMat / WMB Awareness Course

This six hour course was designed by the Ohio Fire Academy and approved through the National Office for Domestic Preparedness.  Topics to be covered in this course include basic recognition, identification, first responder and public protective actions necessary for initial response to a chemical, biological, radiological or explosive incident.  No prerequisite needed for the course.

I.  Public Information Officer 101

An introductory course for Public Information Officers.  This one day course covers the basics of public information including how to effectively communicate with the media before and during emergency situations.  This course is a "hands on" workshop for P.I.O.s.


J.  Methamphetamine Labs

(Sunday only)

A look at what Methamphetamine is and the problems associated with it from a county experiencing it first hand.  Attendees will be informed of those methods of manufacturing methamphetamine located in and around northwest Ohio.  Also discussed will be the patterns of abuse by addicts, children found in the labs, and the potential long term problems associated with methamphetamine labs.  Suggested protocols for Fire and EMS in responding to these hazardous sites, such as decontamination, removal of children and crime scene investigation.


K.  Rapid Intervention Teams

Course will cover the history of "back-up teams"(including 2-in 2-out) and their evolution into "Rapid Intervention Teams (RIT)". Those topics covered will include strategies of rescue, self-rescue techniques, tools and their implementations, safety concerns, and communications. Should facilities exist, practical exercises may be held. Full turnout gear is required for all practical evolutions.


L. Fireground Strategies and Tactics for Small Fire Departments

Learn the necessary strategies and tactics for mitigating structure fires safely and efficiently with limited resources.  The topics of training, equipment, response, communications, engine company operations and the support functions required to be successful on the fire ground will be presented; coupled with discussions on increasing staffing through automatic and mutual aid as well as some tricks-of-the-trade will show how the small town fire department can be as effective as their "big" city counterparts.


M.  Appliance Fires

This course is designed to identify common fire causes in all appliances.  This will help firefighters understand how they happen and what to look for..


N.  LP Gas / Haz-Mat Guildlines

Course is designed to enhance the understanding of the transportation of haz-mat guidelines. Live fire tactical on outside evolutions. Full turnout gear is required for all practical evolutions.


O.   Advanced SCBA

This course is designed for the beginner to the seasoned veteran to test your SCBA confidence and ability to perform under extreme circumstances.  This course will include an entanglement maze and advanced SCBA manuvers.  A working knowledge of self contained breathing apparatus is required.  SCBA and spare bottle along with NFPA cpmpliant PPE required.

This class will review the Everyone Goes Home and the sixteen Life Safety Initiatives to reduce the firefighter line of duty deaths and injuries.  It will also address the fire service changes needed to meet the goal of reducing firefighter fatalities by 25% within 5 years and 50% within 10 years.

Q.  New Vehicle Safety Systems for the Rescuer

This classroom only "power point" presentation will familiarize the rescuer with new vehicle safety systems as well as new vehicle construction and how to deal with them in auto extrication scenarios.  Each student will learn about Vehicle Anatomy, Identification of Safety Systems, Air Bag Systems, Seat Belt Pretensioning Systems, Battery Systems and Locations, new glass technology, Hydraulic lift cylinders, car fires relating to these systems, extrication techniques and more.


R.  Mobile Fire Lab Flashover Trailer

Prerequisites: Certified Firefighters by the State of Ohio of Firefighter I or II or I-A with a minimum of three years experience and has completed a live fire training program.  Fire Chief or Training Officer shall submit documented approval on fire department letterhead.  Protective clothing and SCBA may be subject to damage.

S. Trauma

St Vincent / MUO Staff

This course meets the requirements for the Ohio Department of EMS6 hours of adult trauma.  Continuing education hours provided by Lifeflight.  Students must attend for the full day to get the 6 hour credit.


T.  What's New in the Fire Service

U. Adv. Emergency Response to Railroad Incidents

This class will be in the classroom.Railroad incidents and a review of railroad technology will be given.  If equipment becomes available you will need your own transportation to a class site.  You will also need to wear proper PPE's.


V.  EMS/FIRE Training Update                Sunday Only

Department of Public Safety

This course is designed to update the fire service on proposed training standards and how it will effect the fire service.  We will discuss both fire and EMS training requirements and possible future requirements as well as Grant Application requirements.


W.   Foam

This class is an awareness class of A and B Foams.  We will cover foam terminology, equipment application rates, compressed air foam systems, and differences between class A and B foams.  This is a classroom only class.  No turnout gear will be needed.  You will leave this class with a good understanding of what the white stuff can do to the red stuff.
